The Catholic Diocese of Koforidua joyfully celebrated the annual Chrism Mass, also known as the Mass of the Oils, at St. George Catholic Cathedral on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Present at the Mass were the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum; the priests serving in the diocese; Religious Men and Women; and a large gathering of Christ’s faithful.
The Chrism Mass is one of the most important celebrations in the life of the Church, during which the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick are blessed, and the Sacred Chrism is consecrated. These Holy Oils are used for the sacraments throughout the year. It is also a special occasion when priests renew their priestly promises in the bishop’s presence.
This year’s celebration was made even more memorable as the diocese honoured two groups of jubilarians marking significant milestones in their priestly ministry. Celebrating 40 years in the priesthood were Rev. Msgr. Francis Twum-Barimah, Rev. Frs. Ignatius Yaw Amponsah, and Emmanuel Ofori Adamptey.
Ten Priests also celebrating their Silver Jubilee (25 years in the priesthood) were Rev. Frs. Marcellus Gorleku, Felix Davordzi, Martin Padi, Michael Awuah-Ansah, Peter Debrah, Nicholas Agyei, Ebenezer Amo-Oduro, Francis Agyeman, Sebastian Hackman Owusu-Mensah, and Philip Ekow Taylor, who is currently serving back in his home Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.
In a special gesture, the Bishop invited Very Rev. Fr. Andrew Kwami Dunyo to preach the homily. Drawing inspiration from the readings of the day, he centred his reflection on the theme, “You Are Anointed.” He reminded the clergy of their calling to live lives worthy of the anointing they have received from God.
After the sacred celebration, the Bishop, priests, and religious gathered at St. Bakhita Parish Hall for a joyful luncheon with the jubilarians, marking the day in fraternity, gratitude, and thanksgiving.
