A HISTORIC ACT OF FAITH AND GENEROSITY: ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH DEDICATED AT TROM-KOFORIDUA

TROM 1

Friday, October 9, 2026, marked a historic and memorable occasion in the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua as the newly constructed St. John Vianney Catholic Church at Trom-Koforidua was solemnly dedicated and its altar consecrated. The colourful and spiritually uplifting celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, in the presence of numerous priests, religious men and women, and lay faithful from across the Koforidua Municipality.

The solemn ceremony commenced at the entrance of the church, where the keys to the newly completed building were formally presented to the Bishop, who subsequently handed them over to the Pastoral Director and Chancellor of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Quainoo Aggrey. Following the unveiling of the commemorative plaques, the Bishop, together with the clergy and the faithful, processed solemnly into the church for the dedication rites and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

In his homily, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum expressed profound gratitude to God for the successful completion of the magnificent edifice. He particularly commended the extraordinary generosity and sacrifice of five priests who personally financed the construction of the church, as well as individuals who voluntarily offered their professional services without charge.
Reflecting on the uniqueness of this remarkable gesture, the Bishop observed that neither in his 43 years of priestly ministry nor since the establishment of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua had he witnessed such an extraordinary demonstration of collective generosity by priests towards the construction of a church.

Following the Post Communion Prayer, Very Rev. Fr. Ebenezer Kenneth Abban, PhD, speaking on behalf of the five benefactor priests, said that the dedication of St. John Vianney Catholic Church at Trom, Koforidua, marks the fulfilment of a vision rooted in faith, love for God and remarkable generosity. Drawing inspiration from Matthew 19:26, “With God all things are possible,” Fr. Abban emphasised that the church was not built out of abundance or opulence, but in response to a genuine pastoral need and a desire to glorify God.

The 350–400-capacity church was made possible through the personal sacrifices of five priests: Fr. Joseph Quainoo Aggrey, Fr. Ebenezer Kenneth Abban, Fr. Michael A. Numekevor Jnr., Fr. Evans Eric Akahoho, and Fr. Derick E. Senanu. They acknowledged that whatever they had achieved or received was ultimately by God’s grace and through their priestly vocation. Their contribution, therefore, was an expression of gratitude and faith, grounded in the conviction of Psalm 127:1: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.”

Special recognition was given to Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Quainoo Aggrey, Pastoral Director and Chancellor of the Diocese, who conceived the project and took on several responsibilities throughout its implementation, including procurement, supervision and hands-on work at the site. His commitment and perseverance were instrumental in turning the vision into reality.

Fr. Abban explained that the priests’ contributions came from personal earnings, including salaries, allowances and investments, as well as donations from generous individuals in Ghana and abroad who support their priestly ministry. Their giving was not motivated by the expectation of any reward, but by love for God and the Church, and by a desire to provide a lasting sacred home for worship and encounter with Christ.

The church is intended to be more than a beautiful structure of stone and concrete. It is to be a living temple of God: a place where the faithful gather for prayer, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the reception of the sacraments; where faith is strengthened, the broken are comforted, young people are inspired, the poor are welcomed, and Christ’s love reaches the wider community. The dedication was therefore both a thanksgiving to God and a gift to the Catholic Church for generations yet unborn.

The Bishop formally entrusted the newly dedicated St. John Vianney Catholic Church and the pastoral care of the faithful to the Vicar General of the Diocese, Rev. Msgr. Francis Twum-Barimah.
As the faithful begin a new chapter in the spiritual life of this worshipping community, the newly dedicated church is expected to serve as a centre of prayer, sacramental life, and evangelisation where God's people will continually encounter His love and mercy.

The celebration concluded with group photographs, capturing the joy and gratitude of the clergy, religious, benefactors, and faithful who witnessed this significant milestone in the life of the Diocese.

The occasion was beautifully summed up in the inspirational slogan of the church:

St. John Vianney — Pray for us!

St. John Vianney — Pray for us!

St. John Vianney — With God, all things are possible!

On July 6, 1992, the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua was created. This was publicly announced by his Holiness Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul), through the Papal Bull (an official Church document) Quod iusta quidem, on November 21, 1992. It was the tenth in Ghana, carved from the then Diocese of Accra.
