MOST REV. JOSEPH AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM USES 70TH BIRTHDAY TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BISHOP’S RETIREMENT HOME FOR THE DIOCESE

Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, recently commemorated his 70th birthday on 22nd December 2024 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Akyem Swedru, with an event characterized by joy and purposeful intent. This occasion was utilised as a platform to generate funds for the establishment of a retirement home designated for future bishops within the Diocese.

As articulated by Rev. Msgr. Francis Twum-Barimah, the Vicar General of the Diocese, Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum declined multiple proposals for the construction of a new retirement facility, opting instead to advocate for the renovation of an existing structure. He emphasised that it is the fundamental responsibility of the Diocese to provide suitable accommodation for bishops upon their retirement. The Bishop's decision to dedicate his birthday celebration to fundraising efforts is indicative of his altruistic nature and underscores his unwavering commitment to the advancement of the Diocese.

The celebratory event occurred in Akyem Swedru, which is the Bishop’s home parish. It was attended by numerous distinguished personalities and parishioners, significantly contributing to the success of the fundraising initiatives aimed at the retirement home.

During the Thanksgiving Mass, Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle delivered a poignant homily, reflecting on his long-standing personal relationship with Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum and his family. He expressed gratitude to the Almighty for the Bishop’s dedication and service to the Catholic Church. Archbishop Buckle encouraged those present to support the initiative, highlighting the Bishop’s tradition of utilizing various celebrations to promote selfless causes within the Church.

Furthermore, St. George Catholic Cathedral, Koforidua organised a separate event on 29th December 2024 at the Cathedral to further bolster the efforts for the Bishop’s retirement home, facilitated by Very Rev. Fr. Joseph A. A. Asumadu. The coordination of both fundraising appeals was managed by Very Rev. Fr. Ebenezer Kenneth Abban, PhD, who chaired the committee overseeing the Bishop's birthday celebration.

In conclusion, Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum expressed profound gratitude to all individuals who contributed to the success of his 70th birthday celebration in various capacities. The event not only honoured his life but also laid the foundation for a sustainable future for the leadership of the Diocese.

On July 6, 1992, the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua was created. This was publicly announced by his Holiness Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul), through the Papal Bull (an official Church document) Quod iusta quidem, on November 21, 1992. It was the tenth in Ghana, carved from the then Diocese of Accra.
