STRENGTHENING PASTORAL MINISTRY THROUGH BIBLICAL APOSTOLATE: INSIGHTS FROM THE KOFORIDUA DIOCESAN PASTORAL LEADERS’ CONVOCATION

The recently concluded Pastoral Leaders' Convocation (Mini-Synod), convened by the Koforidua Diocese from 4th to 7th April 2024, at the Koforidua Diocesan Pastoral and Training Centre, had the theme: “Biblical Apostolate, An Essential Tool for Evangelization.” This vital gathering brought together the Clergy, Religious, and Laity to delve into the significance of integrating biblical principles into pastoral ministry/service.

In a profound and reverent ceremony, the diaconate ordination of six candidates; Ebenezer Adu, Maxwell Alaaje, Thomas Ahiaduvor, David Matey Nanor, Gilbert Gbogbo Morthy Jnr., and Kwame Amissah Adu, took place within the solemn context of the Holy Mass at the St. George Cathedral Church, Koforidua, on the 7th of January 2024.

A PRIESTHOOD OF PRAYER AND SERVICE, NOT AFFLUENCE OR POWER – BISHOP AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM

On Saturday, 12th August 2023, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, the Catholic Bishop of Koforidua, presided at Holy Mass during which he ordained on nine (9) Deacons as Priests for the Diocese of Koforidua. Concelebrating with the Prelate were Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare (Auxiliary Bishop of Accra Archdiocese), the Vicar General, Monsignori, as well as scores of Priests across the length and breadth of the Diocese and beyond.

On Wednesday, 25th January, 2023, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifa-Agyekum ordained 9 men to the ministry of Diaconate at St. Peter Catholic Church, Somanya. They are as follows: Revs. Dickson Nukunu Abotsi, Simon Asimeng, Benjamin Danso, Richard Sam-Adjekum, Stephen Foli, Melchizedek B. Agyeman, Richard Edem Mawusi, Charles K. Duah Jnr., and Silas K. Modzi.

POPE JOHN SHS AND MINOR SEMINARY GETS ITS 10TH SUBSTANTIVE HEADMASTER

Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum has inducted into office a new Headmaster for Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) at Effiduase, Koforidua in in the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, on Saturday 21st January 2023.

Very. Rev. Fr. Benjamin Opoku Ohene, the newly inducted Headmaster of the school is a priest from the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra. He becomes the 10th Substantive Headmaster of the Seminary Secondary School since it was established in 1958 by the late Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD.

SANTA BARBARA, AKOSOMBO MARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY

The Santa Barbara Catholic Church, Akosombo has celebrated its 60th Anniversary. The Anniversary marks a critical milestone of bringing spiritual growth to Catholics in the Akosombo Parish and its Outstations. From Friday 12th to Monday 15th August, 2022 Several activities were held to mark the celebrations.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev.Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum was the main celebrant for the Anniversary Mass, assisted by Monsignor Bobby Benson and some Priests in the Diocese of Koforidua.

SIX NEW PRIESTS FOR KOFORIDUA DIOCESE

On Saturday, 6th August, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum ordained six Deacons into the Priesthood for the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua in a colourful ceremony at Santa Barbara Catholic Church, Akosombo. The newly ordained priests are Rev. Fr Michael Owusu Frimpong of New Tafo Parish, Rev. Fr Eric Etse Amevor of Adoagyiri-Nsawam Parish, and Rev. Fr. Eric Godsway Amuyao of Akosombo Parish. The rest are Rev. Fr Moses Kofi Teye of Agomanya Parish, Rev. Fr. Francis Eduah of Suhum Parish and Rev. Fr Edwin Tetteh Okletey of Nkurakan.

BISHOP AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF RECOWA.

Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of Koforidua Diocese, has been elected as the Vice President of the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) at the just ended 4th General Assembly held from the 2nd-9th May, 2022, in Abuja-Nigeria.

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY AND PASTORAL STRATEGIC PLAN DOCUMENTS LAUNCHED BY BISHOP AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM

On 24th April 2022, Divine Mercy Sunday, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, launched two separate important documents on Diocesan Child Protection Policy and a Ten-Year Diocesan Pastoral Strategic Plan which were born out of the splendid hard work of two committees put in place by the Diocesan Bishop three years ago for the purpose of Child protection and roadmap for development and pastoral/evangelisation enhancement respectively in the Diocese. The Prelate of Koforidua also inaugurated two different committees to ensure the implementation of the documents.

KOFORIDUA DIOCESE HOLDS PASTORAL LEADER’S SEMINAR ON SYNODALITY PROCESS

The annual seminar for pastoral leaders (also known as mini-synod) in the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua recommenced this year after a three-year break as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s edition took place at the Koforidua Diocesan Pastoral and Training Centre (DPTC) from 21st April to 24th April, 2022. In keeping with the Synod of Bishops declared by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, on the Synodal Church, the theme for the four-day Mini-Synod was Synodality Process.

On July 6, 1992, the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua was created. This was publicly announced by his Holiness Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul), through the Papal Bull (an official Church document) Quod iusta quidem, on November 21, 1992. It was the tenth in Ghana, carved from the then Diocese of Accra.
